Sathya Sai Baba – A Divine Legend
By Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
“Can there be a better role model than Baba for promoting a nationwide selfless and societal transformation mission?” asks Dr. Abdul Kalam in a thought provoking article that The Hindustan Times published on April 22, 2011.
Dr. Kalam, who has visited Puttaparthi several times, is no stranger to Baba’s Life and Mission. The article focuses on the mammoth social welfare initiatives of Bhagawan Baba. Dr. Kalam starts by stating his admiration for all the work undertaken by Baba. “I admire Bhagwan Sathya Sai Baba for his selfless work and contributions to the welfare of the people by providing drinking water for the rural population, free healthcare facilities for the rural poor and free higher education.”
It might be pertinent to mention here that Dr. Kalam was in fact the Chief Guest on the occasion of the Convocation Ceremony of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in 2002. And in that speech he said, “Is value based education possible? Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning has given an answer in the affirmative.” He was the Chief Guest of Honour for the second time in November 2006.
It was always a beautiful sight to watch the close interactions between Swami and Dr. Kalam. Bhagawan’s love for this much respected scientist-turned-statesman was copious and obvious. And the former President of India on his part was humility personified. Having watched Swami at close quarters on a number of occasions and also keenly witnessed the unfolding of His mission, Dr. Kalam perhaps is one among those who are best equipped to comment on His work. That maybe underscores the need to take a look at the article penned by Dr. Kalam.
