A Tiny Patriotic Puppet Show
- by the inspired little ones of Sri Sathya Sai Primary School

We all have seen many a grand and colourful presentations by the Sri Sathya Sai Primary School. But apart from what is offered in the Divine Presence, and before all of us, the children are constantly encouraged to express their talent through many little in-house events. The prayer session is one time when the children are given a chance to groom their talents and offer them to Bhagawan. We offer you a glimpse into one such prayer session where the children presented a sweet little puppet show, to not only thrill the other little ones, but also to inspire the value of patriotism that is so dear to Swami. This was one of the many such events, we at Radio Sai got to witness and it was presented on 15 Aug 2013.

The song used by these children is a beautiful and famous patriotic song. Weaved into the enchanting music is a profound and timeless message for all humanity. We present below the lyrics and a simple translation for those of you who do not follow the language (Hindi).

Nanhaa munnaa raahi hoon
desh kaa sipaahi hoon
bolo mere sang
jai Hind, jai Hind,
jai Hind
jai Hind, jai Hind

An innocent, tender traveller I am,
a soldier of my Nation,
Join me in hailing
Victory to Bharath, Victory to Bharath

Raste pe chalungaa na dar-dar ke
chaahe mujhe jeenaa pade mar-mar ke
manzil se pehle na loongaa kahin dam
aage hi aage badhaaungaa kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!

I will traverse my path, fearlessly;
Even if I have to live facing death every moment.
I will not seek rest till my goal is reached;
With every step, I will march ahead
Right-Left-Right-Left...

Nayaa hai zamaanaa meri nayi hai dagar
desh ko banaaungaa masheenon kaa nagar
Bhaarat kisi se rahegaa nahin kam
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, tham!

It's a new age, and my ways shall be new as well;
I will transform this country into a city of machines (technology).
Bharath will then be no lesser than any one;
With every step, I will march ahead
Right-Left-Right-Left...

Badaa ho ke desh kaa sahaaraa banungaa
duniyaa ki aankhon kaa taaraa banungaa
rakhungaa oonchaa tirangaa parcham
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!

When I grow up I shall provide care and safety to my country;
And will be a shining star in the eyes of the whole world.
I will keep the Tri-colour (Indian Flag) flying high always;
With every step, I will march ahead
Right-Left-Right-Left...

Shaanti ki nagri hai meraa ye watan
sabko sikhaaungaa main pyaar kaa chalan
duniyaa mein girne na doongaa kahin bam
aage hi aage badhaaunga kadam
daahine baayen daahine baayen, thham!

This country of mine is a realm of peace;
I will teach all the path of love and affection.
I will ensure no one drops a bomb anywhere (will dissuade all from using arms);
With every step, I will march ahead
Right-Left-Right-Left...

In the end, the students also sing the prayer song, that Baba Himself used to sing in His school days when He lead the prayer sessions. This is a verse from the works of Rabindranath Tagore, the same poem from which is culled out the Indian National Anthem.

Aha raha tava
Aahvaana Prachaaritha
Sunishita Udaara Vaani
Hindu Bouddha Sikha
Jaina Paarasika
Musalmaana Kirastaani
Purab Paschima Aase
Tava simhaasana Paase
Prema Vahini

Day and night Thy voice goes out from land to land
calling the Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains round Thy throne and,
the Parsees, Musalmans and Christians.
The East and West join hands in their prayer to Thee,
and the garland of love is woven.
(Excerpt from the original translation by Rabindranath Tagore himself)
