DECEMBER
Swami & Me

Doubly Blessed in a Million Ways
by Nikhila Sri Rao and Nilesh Sai Rao

Posted on: Dec 24, 2017

Our happiest Christmas memories are the times when we would be at Prasanthi Nilayam in the month of December. It has become such a wonderful tradition for our family to visit our Beloved Swami every year during Holy Christmas.

Since we were babies, we would go to our special Sai home during this auspicious occasion. In fact, every trip to Puttaparthi was most treasured and most cherished in a very personal way.

The Messenger and His Message

Posted on: Dec 23, 2017

Many years ago Bhagawan was sitting in the interview room with a devotee and conversing about the Supreme Truth. Anyone with a fair bit of spiritual knowledge will be aware that Truth is nothing but Oneness; there is no difference between Unity and Truth. So Bhagawan was talking to this devotee about how everything is one and there is no duality.

Just a Doggie
A first person account by a canine survivor of the recent hurricane in the US

Posted on: Dec 20, 2017

I whine. My tail is well between my legs. It has been raining continuously since late afternoon yesterday and there is something in the air that tells me that worse is to come. I hate rain and thunder and this one, my doggie instincts tell me, is going to be a whopper of a storm. But my owner says the weatherman is confident the hurricane will pass by without making a landfall. He has all these latest equipment and so many experts working with him. He must be right.

The Goddess of All Things Big and Small
The Loving Life of Bhickoo Dubash, aka Prem Bahl

Posted on: Dec 12, 2017

Born to Parsee parents in 1928 in Bombay, she was named Bhickoo Dubash. But that would be a name nobody would know her by in her later years, thanks to her husband Brigadier Ranjit Rai Bahl. After marriage, moved by her indefatigable ability to shower love on all, he changed her name to 'Prem'. Little did he realise then, that her love was destined to attain fulfilment, assume supreme status and stand as an inspiration to thousands.

Subbamma would sometimes gather all the toddlers on her open terrace in the evening. She would mix the usual dishes of the evening meal and then lovingly feed morsels from the great mix to all of them including Sathya. Hari Naam Gaathe Chalo
Let's Sing with Energy and Let His Energy Make Us Sing

Posted on: Nov 09, 2017

I have noticed two patterns in this bhajan. One is that it refers to a journey. The second is, it tells us what will give us the energy for this journey and consistently sticks to one theme which is ‘The name of the Lord’ - “Hari Naam Gaathe Chalo, Sai Naam Gaathe Chalo”.

So the consistent idea of the bhajan is that of travel and the name of the Lord being the tonic which will give us the power to move forward.

No Time to Pray

Prayer is the key to the morning and the bolt to the evening.

Time and again, mother had been telling her teenaged son that he must get into the habit of saying a prayer in the morning. All the elders in the house were in the habit of spending a few minutes in the shrine room after bathing in the morning.

Mother was trying hard to get Ananya to find time for prayer, in his daily morning routine. Often she would ask him at the breakfast table, “Ananya, have you done your prayers?”

We were a family of four, happily residing in Mumbai in the 1980s when suddenly out of the blue we relocated to Puttaparthi. I say ‘out of the blue’ because my dad was working for a prestigious institution NITIE (National Institute of Industrial Engineering) and my sister and I were still schooling in Mumbai. We have often been asked what triggered such a sudden and drastic move. I think the thought had taken seed long ago and steadily gained shape over the years. But we had to wait for His call.

One room was used to store food grains while the other served as the living room. The kitchen was located at the end of a small passageway. A few wooden poles laid horizontally with a slight slope for regulating the flow of rainwater formed the roof. A bamboo mat spread over the wooden frame and nailed to the walls substituted for tiles. A plaster of lime and a bleaching agent, chavudu, was used as waterproofing material on the roof.

01: Swami says: Every month the Sun moves into a new house in the Zodiac. This movement is called Sankramana. In a year the Sun transits twelve houses of the Zodiac. Of these movements, four are important. Makara Sankramana is the first one. It relates to the entry of the Sun into Makara (Capricorn) from Dhanus (Sagittarius). The second one is Thula Sankramana - the entry of the Sun into the zodiacal sign Thula (Libra). The third is Mesha Sankramana - moving into the sign Mesha (Aries). The fourth one is Shashi Sankramana - entry into the Moon sign (Cancer).

One of these four marks the apparent movement of the sun from the south to the north and is the most sacred of the transits. Which Sankramana or transit is this?
