    But it unconsciously searches for Bliss there. It does not find Bliss but finds a counterfeit called joy instead. Totally misled, it now starts hunting for joy, pleasure and all that. The original urge came from the quest for Bliss, but the end now being chased is the counterfeit. The baby is now trapped, and remains in this trap as it grows up and goes through the whole of life. Indeed this happens life after life. That really is what rebirth is all about.

  • In short, one’s entire life is misspent searching for Bliss in the wrong place. The mistake is not recognised. Another birth is taken and the same mistake is made all over again. And so on the cycle goes, seemingly without an end. Indeed, that is what the Bhaja Govindam that Swami often refers to is all about. In one of the stanzas of Sage Adi Shankara that Baba often quotes, the Sage laments:

    Birth again and death again,
    In between, countless sojourns in countless wombs!
